How to download Instagram stories without logging in
By Syed Abdullah Shah · Last tested September 26, 2026
Instagram stories expire after 24 hours. If the account is public, you can open its current stories in your browser and save each photo or video at the quality Instagram delivered, with no password and no app to install. This guide covers other people’s stories, your own stories, and where the files end up on each device.
Download someone else’s story (public accounts)
- Open the Story Viewer. It works in any browser on phone or computer.
- Paste a public username. Use the handle (with or without @) or the instagram.com profile link. Private accounts return an error on purpose, because their stories aren’t public.
- Watch, then download. Tap a thumbnail to view it, then tap Download. Photos save as JPG and videos as MP4, at the quality Instagram delivered. We don’t add a watermark.
Save anything you want right away. Download links expire, and we don’t keep an archive, so once the story is gone from Instagram it’s gone from us too.
Where the file goes on each device
| Device | Where to find it | To move it to your gallery |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (Safari) | Files app, Downloads folder | Open the file, tap Share, then Save Video or Save Image |
| Android (Chrome) | Downloads, or the Files app | Most gallery apps show it automatically |
| Windows or Mac | Your browser’s Downloads folder | Not needed |
Download your own Instagram stories
For your own stories you don’t need any tool. Instagram lets you save them directly.
- While the story is live: open your story, tap More (the three dots), then Save.
- After it expires: go to your profile, open the menu, tap Archive, and switch to the Stories archive. Open the story, tap More, then Save. Stories only appear here if archiving is turned on, which it is by default.
Other ways to save a story, and their trade-offs
| Method | Works for | Quality | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story Viewer (this site) | Public accounts | What Instagram delivered | No login, and no name in the viewer list |
| Instagram’s Save button or Archive | Your own stories only | Original | Built in, no tool needed |
| Screen recording | Anything you can see | Lower, includes the app’s buttons | You’re logged in, so your name appears in the viewer list |
Instagram doesn’t notify people when you screenshot or screen-record a story. It only notifies for disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs.
If no stories show up
- The account is private. Only approved followers can see its stories, so no tool can show them.
- Nothing was posted in the last 24 hours, or the story already expired. Check the Highlights Viewer with the same username. The owner may have pinned it there.
- The username is misspelled. Paste the full profile link instead.
- It’s a Close Friends story (green ring). These are only shared with the owner’s chosen list.
Please use downloads fairly
Stories belong to the people who post them. Saving one for your own offline reference is one thing. Reposting it, or using it commercially, needs the creator’s permission. If you share something you saved, credit the creator.
Questions
- Do I need an Instagram account?
- No. Public lookups don’t use your Instagram login.
- Will the person know I downloaded their story?
- No. They’re not notified, and your name isn’t added to their viewer list, because your account isn’t used.
- Can I recover an expired story?
- Not from this site, because we never stored it. If the owner pinned it, try the Highlights Viewer. If it’s your own story, check your Archive.
- Why is the video lower quality than I expected?
- You get the file Instagram delivered, which is often compressed compared with what the creator uploaded. No tool can make it sharper.
- Can I download all of an account’s stories at once?
- No. You save one photo or video at a time.
